Never Trust Apple With Your Data

I just lost over a years worth of iphone photos when I updated my iphone to iOS5. I thought they were backed up. Every time you plug your iphone into your laptop it makes that beep, itunes opens and 'backs up' your data.

Unfortunately, what itunes is actually doing is blindly overwriting the previous backup with the new data. So when I replugged in my newly updated, blank iOS5 iphone, it merrily went to work overwriting all my pictures with a blank backup.
